Congenital heart diseases account for 15% of neonatal deaths within first 30 days of the life. Surgery is absolutely required for more than half of the babies with a congenital heart disease. Heart surgery is needed for at least 6 thousand new patients every year. Recently, more than 90% of the infants with congenital heart disease will have normal or almost normal quality of life and chance of survival through surgeries and procedures thanks to advancements in surgery, anesthesia and intensive care techniques along with the technology. If a surgical treatment is required for simple heart holes, such as Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD), and stenotic heart valves, such as Pulmonary Stenosis, most of the children will have a healthy heart and do what their healthy peers can do after the surgery. Knowledge, experience and modern technological means of the Advanced Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Pediatric Cardiology and Surgery Department in Hisar Hospital Intercontinental may cure the cardiovascular diseases that were deemed as a hopeless case in the past.
In the Pediatric Cardiology Department, diagnostic and therapeutic services are offered for cardiac problems of fetus, infant, minor child, child and adolescent (until age of 18 years). Most common pediatric cardiac diseases include congenital heart diseases (hole, stenosis), acquired heart diseases (rheumatoid valve diseases, infectious diseases) and cardiac rhythm disorders. The baseline complaints of our patients often include murmur, cyanosis, poor exercise capacity, chest pain, palpitation, dizziness, syncope or high blood pressure. The diagnosis is usually made with diagnostic methods such as electrocardiography (ECG), telecardiography and echocardiography (ECHO). Heart of fetus can be assessed with fetal ECHO during intra-uterine life. If necessary, other methods are used including but not limited to exercise test, HOLTER monitoring, cardiac catheterization and angiography. Please see following titles for further details.
Why Advanced Diagnosis and Treatment Center of Pediatric Cardiology and Surgery Center?

Operating Theatres
Two of the seven operating rooms are specially designed for Pediatric Heart Surgeries at our hospital. Our operation theater has spacious operating rooms that are equipped with sterile and semi-sterile corridors, which facilitate maintenance of sterilizations, the PYXIS – safe drug utilization systems – and anesthesia devices, which are continuously checked regarding the safety. All operating rooms have sterile airflow systems that set a strong barrier against microbes by pressurizing the air before it is exhausted outside the hospital. All anesthesia devices, systems and tools are hung to the ceiling with special systems (pendant) in operating rooms for adaptation to sterilization and ergonomics.

Intensive Care Services
Postoperative care for major surgeries on very small hearts is among the principal stages of the treatment that has very significant impact on the recovery phase. The Neonatal Intensive Care and Pediatric Intensive Care Units of Hisar Hospital Intercontinental are specially designed for this delicate and affectionate care. Our hospital acts very carefully to admit each patient to a single room – the most up-to-date approach that is globally acknowledged – in our unit. Special nurse desks available in front of each room allow optimal follow-up and monitoring of patients at the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit; whole body of patients can be cleaned in a special section of the unit without any need to get the patient outside the bed. Beds and incubators are designed to enable all interventions in case of emergencies. The patient monitors that show vital parameters, digital syringes and serum pumps that allow the ability to control infusion rate of intravenous agents, vacuum devices, mechanical ventilators and the devices that evaluate functions of heart as well as other equipment ensure the most effective treatment and care.

Substantial Investment for Use of Advanced Technology
As is the case with other diseases, diagnosis of pediatric heart diseases is very crucial for successful treatment. Hisar Hospital Intercontinental has contemporary equipment with cutting-edge technology that requires high investment costs in order to enable our physicians take firm steps for diagnosing and treating diseases of small hearts. All examination and tests results can be accessed and archived in PACS system of our hospital, while PYXIS – the computerized drug preparation system that minimizes the medication errors – uses a developed medical service infrastructure. Besides all diagnosis and treatment procedures, urgent surgeries are supported by a team of diagnosis and treatment that works around the clock. Considering the use of medical technology, our mission is “Correct diagnosis is made only by selecting and performing the most appropriate method with lowest risk for each patient”.
Advanced Technology Offering Speed and Superiority in Diagnosis
Echocardiography
It is an ultrasonographic diagnosis method that evaluates structure and function of heart in children at any age and that does not harm the child.
Fetal Echocardiography
This advanced-technology ultrasound scanner helps physicians evaluate fetal heart and blood vessel originating from the heart as of 16th week of the pregnancy and this technology detects the signs that point to a heart disease.
Transesophageal Echocardiography
If superficial (transthoracic) echocardiography – the most commonly used modality – cannot offer detailed images or if a lung disease, deformity or chest structure does not allow high-quality echocardiographic image, transesophageal Echocardiography acquires echocardiographic images through the esophagus.
- Stress Test: this method investigates the stress capacity of the heart in children. This method not only measures the stress capacity in children with a heart disease, but it also allows evaluation of health children who have a complaint during exercise (poor exercise capacity, chest pain, fainting etc.). Moreover, risk analysis can be performed for the healthy children who will do intensive sport activities.
- Rhythm Holter: Heart rhythm is assessed throughout 24 hours with a small and non-hazardous device attached to the child’s body in children with rhythm disorder, healthy children with palpitation and the children with other certain diseases.
- Angiography (Cardiac Catheterization – Angiocardiography)
A tiny catheter is inserted into an artery or a vein in the groin to detect anomalies of the heart and blood vessels.
