PATHOLOGY

Pathology is an area of medical specialty that studies the origin, causes, developmental processes and results of the diseases. In this end, the structural changes are examined in tissues and cells of the biopsy specimens collected from body tissues and fluids. Following a detailed macroscopic examination of the biopsy specimens in our pathology laboratory, they are processed by the next-generation tissue sample preparation, paraffin blocking and microtome and frozen section devices. Microscopic diagnosis is made for the biopsy specimens within the shortest time possible and the result is reported to the relevant physician. Thus, loss of time is minimized and a chance is created to start treatments necessary for the patient as soon as possible. Intraoperative histopathologic (frozen section) diagnosis can be made during a surgery, if and whenever needed. The state-of-the-art cryostat device is used for this procedure.

In our laboratory, routine cytological examinations, such as vaginal-cervical smear, sputum, and all body fluid examinations, are performed along with the histopathologic studies. Ultrasound- or CT-guided fine needle aspiration biopsy specimens are collected from organs and tissues, including but not limited to breast, thyroid, lung, liver, lymph node, salivary gland and soft tissue masses, in the radiology department and they are reviewed during the procedure to determine whether there is sufficient material to make a diagnosis. Thus, the procedure is not unnecessarily repeated. After the specimens are duly processed, the diagnosis is made as soon as possible. Our pathology laboratory also provides diagnosis and consultation services for biopsy specimens, cytology samples, preprocessed preparations and paraffin blocks referred from other institutions or patients. If requested, macroscopic and microscopic digital images are provided.
