What is colon cancer?

It is a type of cancer caused by polyps developing in the large intestine called colon. Colon cancer, which is more common especially in western countries, ranks 3rd in the world in terms of incidence. Environmental and genetic factors are involved in the formation of colon cancer, the exact cause of which is unknown. Colon cancer may originate from the polyps that develop in the colon, or it may develop from the mucosa forming the inner surface.

Surgery Options

Colorectal cancer is typically treated with surgery, especially if it has not spread to other areas of the body. The success of the surgery often depends on the surgeon’s experience with the procedure. At Hisar Hospital, colorectal cancer surgeries are performed by specialized surgeons who are leaders in the field on both national and international levels. The type of surgery recommended depends on the stage and location of the tumor, and options include:

B Ikon 5

Polypectomy: A procedure where a colonoscope is used to remove a polyp from the rectum. It’s ideal for early-stage and localized colon cancer cases.

B Ikon 3

Endoscopic Mucosal Resection (EMR) or Endoscopic Submucosal Dissection (ESD): If a polyp is too large to be removed by a polypectomy, EMR or ESD may be performed. This advanced endoscopic procedure can sometimes avoid major surgery.

B Ikon 1

Colectomy: A surgical procedure where the section of the colon affected by cancer, along with surrounding tissue and associated lymph nodes, is removed. It’s generally done with a minimally invasive approach.

B Ikon 6

Proctectomy: A procedure where a part of the rectum, along with surrounding tissue containing lymph nodes, is removed when the cancer is located in the rectum. This can be done with sphincter-preserving surgery to retain bowel control.

B Ikon 4

Pelvic Exenteration: A highly specialized operation that involves removing any structure affected by cancer within the pelvis, such as the rectum, part of the colon, reproductive organs, or bladder. Reconstructive surgery may be required.

B Ikon 2

Minimally Invasive Laparoscopic Surgery: A procedure where small cuts are made in the abdomen to introduce a tiny camera and surgical instruments. High-definition video imaging is used to perform the surgery, which can result in faster recovery with less pain. The surgeon may choose to perform either minimally invasive robotic or laparoscopic surgery, or traditional open surgery.

MEDICAL TECHNOLOGIES

MR-Linac 1,5 Tesla

MR-LINAC is a “smart radiotherapy” method that destroys the tumour with rays by targeting with special images and measurements.

MR-LINAC, which has more advanced equipment compared to conventional radiotherapy, provides new and important gains to the patient and radiation oncologist thanks to MR (Magnetic Resonance) added to radiotherapy.

Since the MR Linac can monitor tumour movement caused by breathing, swallowing and other normal body movements during treatment, irradiation is applied directly to the tumour and healthy tissues are also protected. By identifying the most active and aggressive parts of the tumour, higher doses of radiation can be delivered to this area.

  • Different dose settings can be made each time
  • By following the movements of tumour tissues and internal organs, pinpoint radiotherapy can be performed
  • MRI in soft tissues can instantly detect tumours and change treatment
  • The tumour can be easily monitored even during treatment without markers
  • Shorter treatment duration compared to radiotherapy treatments

Linac

A modern linear accelerator (Linac) is a device that generates high-energy X-rays and electron beams for the treatment of cancer patients. Radiation therapy is based on the interaction between matter and radiation. Thanks to the Simetry feature in the Elekta Versa HD device, errors that may occur during treatment can be prevented by monitoring tumour and intact organ movements. Up to 1 mm. can provide the treatment of brain tumours with special apparatus.

Thanks to the Vision RT method;

  • Reliable treatment
  • Preventing the risk of wrong patient and wrong site
  • Possibility to monitor patient movements at any time
  • No need for marking with marker
  • Unmasked treatment for claustrophobic patients
  • No radiation exposure

Robotic and Fully Automated Drug Preparation

While the treatment of patients in the chemotherapy unit will be carried out in a comfortable environment, the medicines prepared for the patients will be prepared by fully automatic and robotic systems in a sterile, untouched, sterile manner to protect employee and patient safety.

PET-CT

PET-CT is an advanced technological imaging method created by the combination of positron emission tomography (PET) and computerized tomography (CT) and plays an active role especially in the field of oncology, as well as cardiac and neurological disorders.

  • Evaluating The Effectiveness Of The Therapy
  • Safe And Painless Scanning

What Is Different In Hisar Intercontinental Hospital for PET-CT?

Gruppe maskieren 2

Same Day PET-CT Scanning

Same Day Result

High Definition

The PET-CT device in our hospital serves our patients with the highest resolution image available in the industry, with 95 mm3 in a 400×400 matrix recon. Thus, even the smallest details that cannot be seen in other devices are detected, contributing to the diagnosis and treatment process and helping to prevent unnecessary surgical procedures and biopsies.

Wider Gantry

Our device, which was developed considering overweight and obese patients, has a 24 percent wider gantry than other manufacturers. The larger space is also an advantage for people with claustrophobia.

Low Radiation, High Speed

Our PET-CT device, which works with lower dose radiation, not only increases patient comfort, but also detects abnormalities such as cancerous cells by scanning the entire body with maximum speed and sensitivity.

Diagnosis with less radioactive material

Compared with other devices, scans can be performed by obtaining high-resolution images with a lower dose of radioactive material administered through the intravenous line.

Assoc. Prof. Kıvanç Derya Peker, M.D.

General and Gastroenterology Surgeon

Assoc. Prof. Kıvanç Derya Peker completed his medical education and general surgery specialization at Istanbul University Istanbul Faculty of Medicine (Çapa). After his major specialization, he got his Gastroenterology Surgery Specialization from the Gastroenterology Surgery Clinic of Kartal Koşuyolu Yüksek İhtisas Training and Research Hospital by entering the top 3 in the minor examination.

During his sub-branch assistantship, he received a scholarship from the Turkish Surgery Association and worked at Mayo Clinic (Rochester, USA) Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery Clinic and Obesity-Metabolic Surgery Clinic. After returning to Turkey, He was one of the founders of the Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery unit at Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital. Peker provided Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery training to general surgery residents and gastroenterology surgery residents in this hospital, which is accepted as a training unit by the Turkish HPB Association.

On the other hand; In order to learn stem cells, cancer biology, cellular properties of obesity and aging, he did his doctorate and thesis on aging at Istanbul University, Istanbul Faculty of Medicine (Çapa), Department of Medical Biology. Then, he moved to Başakşehir Çam and Sakura City Hospital to establish the Gastroenterology Surgery Clinic.

Especially in his career; He is interested in Pancreatic Diseases and Surgery, Gallbladder and Bile Duct Diseases Surgery, Liver Cancer Surgery, Stomach Cancer Surgery and Obesity-Metabolic Surgery. Peker has carried out many successful operations. He has performed over 400 pancreatic and gastric cancer surgeries, over 200 liver surgeries, many surgeries related to gallbladder and biliary tract diseases, obesity – metabolic surgery and endoscopic treatments, and kidney transplants so far. He is also interested in aging and stem cell treatments.
