General Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. Pakize Eker Balcıoğlu informs about Perianal Fistula and its Treatments.
Perianal fistula disease is the condition where abscesses occurring around the anus start to drain either by bursting with or without medical assistance. In some cases, the opening where the abscess drains can heal on its own, while in others, the patient may need to consult a doctor again. Problems usually begin from this point onward. To give a general ratio, according to recent studies, approximately one-third of anal abscesses remain as fistulas after being drained or bursting spontaneously, showing up intermittently as discharge or a foul odor. The surgery for perianal fistulas is quite complicated. After the patient consults us, MRI scans of the perianal region are performed to map the area. Where does this opening connect inside? Which part of the muscle does it pass through? Is there a relation to your anal sphincter muscle? These are identified, and based on the results, shape, and number, the types of surgery are determined. All types of perianal fistula surgeries are successfully performed in our hospital. However, in recent years, the laser method, which allows patients to return to work the next day, has become a preferred option.
