When we look at the spine from behind, we see that it forms a straight line made up of the vertebrae stacked on top of one another. However, when we look at a developing or developed spine from the side, we see that it is not a straight line: in particular, there is a hollow in the neck and lower back regions, and a hump in the chest and upper back regions. This curvature in the chest and back regions varies from person to person. This is caused by angular variations.
Basically, kyphosis can be evaluated in two ways.
Postural Kyphosis, which is seen depending on posture, is what we call our Postural Kyphosis,
Scheuermann's Kyphosis, which is frequently seen during the growth period.
Families generally bring their children to us as a posture disorder; as a result of the evaluations we perform, we see that these are kyphosis arising entirely from posture.
Treatment of Kyphosis
In postural kyphosis, activity modifications with sports and exercises can succeed in correcting it,
while Scheuermann's kyphosis, because it is a condition resulting from changes in the anatomical features of several vertebrae, sometimes requires corset treatment alongside exercises, and surgical treatment is required when the angle reaches a certain degree, particularly an angular deviation of 70-75 degrees.
During surgical treatments, we place screws called pedicle screws into the diseased segment, bring it back to its normal anatomy with rod systems called rods, then fix it in place and wait for this region to fuse.
Post-Operative Period
After kyphosis surgery, one of the questions families frequently ask us is when the child can return to normal daily life.
Patients we have operated on can return to school around the end of the 3rd week, after completing their observation in the hospital for about 3-4 days.
These patients, whom we keep away from sports activities for 3 months, are allowed to begin individual sports such as swimming after the 6th month; however, we need approximately 1 year for them to fully return to their daily life.
