Prostate Health Clinic: frequently asked questions

Which conditions are treated at the Prostate Health Clinic?

Our clinic diagnoses and treats all prostate conditions, most notably acute and chronic inflammation of the prostate (prostatitis), benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and prostate cancer. Diagnosis is based on a physical examination, a PSA test, ultrasound, prostate MRI and, where needed, MRI-fusion biopsy.

When should men start having prostate check-ups?

Men without symptoms are advised to have a urology check-up once a year from the age of 50. If your father or brother has had prostate cancer, check-ups start at 40–45. If you have symptoms such as frequent urination, getting up at night to urinate, a weak urine stream or blood in the urine, see a urologist without waiting until you reach that age.

What treatments are available for benign prostatic hyperplasia?

For mild symptoms, monitoring and medication may be enough. If symptoms persist despite medication, procedures that require no incision are used. These include Rezum, which shrinks the prostate with water vapour; HoLEP and thuFLEP, in which prostate tissue is removed by laser; TUIP; and prostate artery embolisation. The method is chosen according to the size of the prostate and the patient's general health.

How is prostate cancer treatment planned?

Treatment is planned individually, based on the PSA level, the biopsy result, the stage of the disease, and the patient's age and general health. Options include active surveillance for low-risk tumours, robotic or laparoscopic radical prostatectomy or radiotherapy for organ-confined disease, and hormone therapy and other drug treatments for advanced disease.
