Sema Karakaş

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sema Karakaş completed her medical education at Istanbul University Cerrahpaşa Faculty of Medicine. She completed her residency training in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital and became a specialist in Obstetrics and Gynecology in 2015.

Driven by a particular interest in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sema Karakaş continued her academic career in the field of Gynecologic Oncology Surgery. She completed her subspecialty training in the Gynecologic Oncology clinics of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman Training and Research Hospital and Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital, subsequently becoming a specialist in Gynecologic Oncology Surgery.

Throughout her training and professional career at some of Türkiye’s leading high-volume referral centers, she has had the opportunity to manage some of the most complex cases in gynecologic oncology. She has gained extensive clinical and surgical experience in the diagnosis, surgical treatment, and multidisciplinary management of cancers of the female reproductive system. During and following this period, she has played an active role in the surgical and overall treatment management of hundreds of patients with advanced-stage, recurrent, and high-risk gynecologic cancers.

With extensive experience in robotic surgery, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sema Karakaş utilizes advanced surgical technologies in the treatment of gynecologic cancers. Compared with conventional open surgery, minimally invasive robotic techniques may offer benefits such as smaller incisions, reduced postoperative pain, lower blood loss, and faster recovery, when clinically appropriate.

She has also played an active role in the implementation of an innovative surgical approach in which scarless surgery performed through the vaginal route, without any abdominal incision, was combined with Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy (HIPEC). This pioneering procedure was successfully performed for the first time in the world and was subsequently reported in the international medical literature as the “world’s first case.”

In recognition of her advanced expertise in robotic surgery, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sema Karakaş serves as an expert surgeon and mentor for gynecologists and gynecologic oncologists who are beginning their robotic surgery training and seeking to develop competency in this field. She provides mentorship during their initial robotic surgery cases, contributing to the development of their skills and helping them gain experience in a safe and standardized manner.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sema Karakaş has served as the Head of the Gynecologic Oncology Surgery Clinic at Bakırköy Dr. Sadi Konuk Training and Research Hospital, one of Türkiye’s busiest gynecologic oncology centers. In this role, she has taken an active responsibility not only for the planning and execution of advanced surgical procedures, but also for the development of the clinic’s academic activities, coordination of multidisciplinary tumor boards, and management of specialist training programs. During her clinical leadership, she made significant contributions to the management of patients with advanced-stage and recurrent gynecologic cancers, as well as to the training and development of young specialists, combining her academic expertise with strong clinical experience and leadership skills.

She has also served as a Training Faculty Member in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, contributing to the education and professional development of young physicians while managing the treatment of patients with advanced-stage and recurrent gynecologic cancers. Through this role, she has combined her academic background with extensive clinical experience.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sema Karakaş has authored numerous scientific publications in national and international peer-reviewed medical journals. She also serves as a reviewer for several scientific journals and actively contributes to the advancement of scientific knowledge in the field of gynecologic oncology.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sema Karakaş currently sees patients at Hisar Hospital Intercontinental, where she provides comprehensive care in the diagnosis and treatment of gynecologic cancers based on scientific principles, advanced technology, ethical standards, and a patient-centered approach.
