As we enter the winter season, another physical complaint has been added to our list: chronic fatigue… Ear, nose and throat conditions that cause chronic fatigue, yet which we are unaware of, can reduce our quality of life. We spoke with the Ear, Nose and Throat Diseases and Head and Neck Surgery Specialists at Hisar Hospital Intercontinental about the ENT problems that cause this fatigue.

Specialists who emphasized that fatigue, which can be defined as the prolonged presence of many problems such as feeling physically unwell, loss of work capacity, behavioral changes, loss of concentration, and sexual disinterest, is mainly caused by upper respiratory tract problems, stated: ‘Bodies that do not meet the oxygen requirement of our body inevitably experience fatigue, and problems in our ear, nose and throat region can trigger chronic fatigue. These include:

-Deviated nasal septum that obstructs the airway,

-Nasal polyps (turbinate hypertrophy),

-Chronic sinusitis that has become chronic,

-Unrecognized chronic sinusitis,

-Generalized swelling of the inside of the nose due to allergies,

-Adenoid (pharyngeal tonsil) hypertrophy,

-Enlargement or abnormal position of the soft palate and uvula,

-Abnormally large palatine tonsils,

-A large tongue that does not fit within the oral cavity,

-A small or receded chin (retrognathia),

Polyps settling on the vocal cords can also cause chronic fatigue. Therefore, if you have chronic fatigue that does not go away for a long time, be sure to consult an ENT specialist.’
