Take note of changes in your fingers, especially if the section between the nail bed and the fingertip widens and changes shape. It may be a harbinger of many diseases.
We discussed diseases that manifest with digital clubbing with the Chest Diseases Specialists at Hisar Hospital Intercontinental…
What is digital clubbing?
The widening and bulging of the fingertips, specifically the section between the nail bed and the fingertip, to take on a club-like shape is called clubbed fingers or digital clubbing. It usually starts with the thumb and spreads to other fingers. It frequently affects the fingers of both hands. Sometimes, clubbing can also occur in the toes simultaneously.
In which diseases is it seen more frequently?
Congenital heart diseases in children (especially in Tetralogy of Fallot) and lung cancer in adults are the most common causes.
Apart from these;
It can also be seen in respiratory system diseases such as lung abscess, bronchiectasis (widening and destruction of the bronchi, i.e., airways), empyema (accumulation of pus between the lung membranes), pulmonary fibrosis (hardening of the lungs), severe pneumonia, severe chronic tuberculosis;
In heart diseases such as heart failure, infective endocarditis (inflammation of the heart valves); in cirrhosis, inflammatory bowel diseases such as Ulcerative Colitis and Crohn's; in all organ or tissue cancers that metastasize (spread) to the lungs and/or lung membranes, Hodgkin's disease, lymphoma, and thyroid cancer.
Can we always accept digital clubbing as a harbinger of a disease?
No. In 1-3% of cases, it is familial, meaning it can be seen in other family members, and in this case, it is not a sign of a disease. Clubbing can also be seen in only one hand. In this case, one should not think of diseases that could cause digital clubbing, but rather trauma or diseases of the hand vessels or nerves.
What should a person who notices clubbing in their fingers do?
Since digital clubbing can be the earliest sign of many serious diseases, a chest diseases specialist should be consulted without delay. In this way, the opportunity for early diagnosis and treatment will not be missed.
