Intelligence Test

What Is an Intelligence Test?

Intelligence tests for individuals aged 2–16 measure intellectual potential and yield an intelligence score. Today, the most widely used intelligence tests are for ages 2–6, the Stanford-Binet Intelligence Test, and for children aged 6–16, the current Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-IV).

When Should an Intelligence Test Be Administered?

Administering intelligence tests to children is important to see their intellectual development and support them according to their capacity, and you can have the test done for either purpose:

  1. When you feel their intellectual development is insufficient.

  2. When their intellectual development is advanced.

In both cases, having your children tested is not about labelling them but about planning their future by supporting their education and social life. This planning happens when, after the test, the specialist explains to the family how the child should be supported intellectually, emotionally and socially in academic, social and personal development.

Intelligence tests are meaningful when done for this purpose. If the test is not followed by support for your child, it remains mere labelling and will not contribute to the child, family life, education or the family.

You can have an intelligence test done due to developmental problems your child experiences at school or in social life:

  • Difficulty reading and writing,

  •  Insufficient numerical skills,

  • Slow learning pace,

  • Attention deficit; inability to focus on lessons, getting bored easily

  • Learning difficulty; mixing up letters, misreading

You can have an intelligence test done when negative situations are seen in children's social lives:

  • Inability to fit in with peer groups,

  • Difficulty with personal care and skills

You can have an intelligence test done due to outstanding performance:

  • In children who are very curious, ask many questions, learn to read at an early age and have strong reasoning skills.

  • In children whose vocabulary exceeds that of their peers

  • In children with a strong imagination,

  • You can have an intelligence test done for children whose developmental stages are ahead of their peers.
