Coping with Chronic Pain

Chronic pain is a persistent pain condition lasting more than three months that adversely affects a person’s daily life, sleep and mood. Unlike acute pain, chronic pain often continues even after the underlying damage has healed and becomes a health problem in its own right.

Herniated lumbar and cervical discs, fibromyalgia, diabetic neuropathy, trigeminal neuralgia and cancer pain are among the most common sources of chronic pain. These pains are not only physical; they also create multifaceted effects such as loss of productivity, social withdrawal and depression.

The Pain Clinic (Algology) is a dedicated unit where chronic pain is evaluated in a multidisciplinary way. The aim is not merely to suppress pain but to identify its source, restore lost function and minimise medication use.

Interventional algology methods include epidural steroid injection, radiofrequency thermocoagulation, nerve and ganglion blocks, and neuromodulation. These procedures are mostly performed under local anaesthesia, as day cases, and are targeted.

Interventional methods yield the best results when combined with physiotherapy, exercise, psychological support and rational medication management. Lifestyle adjustments — regular activity, weight control, sleep hygiene and stress management — are an integral part of the treatment.

If your pain lasts more than three months, does not resolve despite painkillers or limits your daily life, it is advisable to consult an algology specialist. With the right diagnosis and a personalised plan, it is possible to regain your quality of life.
