Has your back been hurting a lot lately? Are the medications you take to relieve the pain, thinking you made a wrong move, not working? Then it would be beneficial to consult a physician.
We discussed when back pain should be taken seriously with the Orthopedics and Traumatology Specialists at Hisar Hospital Intercontinental.
Stating that spinal diseases should be considered in patients who experience numbness and loss of strength in their legs, even in the absence of a history of trauma, the specialists said: 'The vast majority of back pain is actually due to poor posture, mechanical causes, and smoking habits. However, in cases of severe back pain that has persisted for a long time, some serious spinal diseases must be considered. In elderly patients with no history of trauma who present with numbness and loss of strength in the legs, spinal stenosis caused by narrowing of the spinal canal leading to compression of the spinal cord or nerve roots, and spondylolisthesis (slippage of the lumbar vertebrae) should be brought to mind. Especially in these patients, severe cramps that prevent the person from walking as soon as they stand up are one of the important signs of the disease. In cases of severe pain that occurs with mild and simple injuries, fractures due to osteoporosis in advanced age, and in cases accompanied by weight loss, fatigue, and fever, spinal tuberculosis, spinal inflammation, or spinal cancers should also be investigated. For this reason, if you have severe back pain that has been going on for a long time, you should definitely consult an orthopedics and traumatology physician.'
