Modern Disease of the Modern Age: Chronic Fatigue Syndrome…

If you have been experiencing constant headaches and muscle aches recently even though you do not have the flu, and you feel unable to recover no matter how much you rest, you may be experiencing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

We spoke with Internal Medicine Specialist Dr. Akif Nuri Doğan of Hisar Hospital Intercontinental about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, which often goes unnoticed because it shares many features with other diseases…

Specialist Dr. Doğan, noting that the cause of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is not known despite several theories, said: ‘Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is inflammation of the nervous system resulting from a dysfunctional immune system. The disease, which is seen more frequently in women aged 30-50 in particular, has symptoms very similar to those of the flu or other viral infections. Muscle pain, extreme fatigue and headache are the most common symptoms. Its most important cause is stress.’

Am I Experiencing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome?

If you have a fatigue that does not go away no matter how much you rest, for at least 6 months,

If this fatigue is accompanied by headaches and muscle pain,

If you experience enough pain to restrict your daily activities,

If pain that would normally subside within 1 hour after exercise lasts 24 hours without improving,

If you have started experiencing forgetfulness and concentration problems,

If you have joint pain without arthritis symptoms such as redness and swelling,

If you feel dazed or lightheaded,

If you cannot get restful sleep despite sleeping 5-8 hours,

If you are overly sensitive to sound, noise, light and environmental factors,

If you have a rising fever, even if it is not high (a fever below 38,3),

If you have throat pain and burning, it is beneficial to consult your physician. You may be experiencing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Diagnosis and Treatment

There is no specific test for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. At least four symptoms must be present together. In particular, unexplained fatigue of very long duration plays an important role in making the diagnosis. After possible causes have been ruled out through examinations and tests, the diagnosed condition requires symptomatic and combined treatment. The aim of treatment is to reduce symptoms. Many patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also have depression and psychological disorders that improve with treatment. Treatment includes:

· Behavioral therapy and, for some patients, graded exercise

· Healthy nutrition

· Sleep management techniques

· Medication to relieve pain, discomfort and fever

· Medication for anxiety

· Includes a combination of medication for depression.

Patients living with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome are encouraged to lead an active social life. Relaxation and stress-reduction techniques may help reduce chronic pain and fatigue; however, they are not the primary treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Moderate physical exercise may also be beneficial. Your physician can help you determine how much activity you can do and how to gradually increase it. If you feel persistent, frequent fatigue, contact your specialist whether or not you have symptoms of the disease. Other serious diseases can present with similar findings, and these must be ruled out.

Tips for Coping with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome…

· Avoid excessive exercise on days when you feel tired.

· Maintain a balance between your activity, rest and sleep times.

· Break large tasks down into smaller, more manageable parts.

· Spread more demanding tasks out over the week.

· Practice deep breathing exercises.
