What is Hemorrhoid?

Did you know that hemorrhoids, which are becoming more common today as poor eating habits spread and fast food in particular takes a central place in our lives, have as their greatest enemy the habit of being ashamed of the disease and delaying a visit to a specialist for as long as possible, and that in fact, if you seek treatment in time, you can easily recover from this disease?

What is hemorrhoid?

Hemorrhoid is the name given to the 3 venous, that is, "dirty blood," vessels located in the inner wall of the anus. The term hemorrhoid disease refers to the whole group of complaints caused by the swelling of one, two, or all of these vessels and the friction created by passing stool over them.

Who is it more common in?

Hemorrhoid is a disease that can be seen at any age, including in children. It is frequently seen in people with disturbed bowel habits who suffer from constipation or diarrhea, in people working in highly stressful professions, in people who spend their lives sitting for long periods, and in pregnant women.

Does giving birth vaginally in particular trigger hemorrhoids in women?

It is not the mode of delivery that triggers hemorrhoids, but pregnancy itself. In other words, hemorrhoids can occur whether the delivery is normal or by cesarean section. The main cause is the pressure that the growing uterus exerts during pregnancy on the venous vessels that carry "dirty blood" from the lower part of your body back to the heart. As the baby grows, the pressure increases, and blood pools in the lower part, leading to hemorrhoids and varicose veins.

Is there a connection with lifestyle habits?

Many factors, such as eating habits, stress, prolonged sitting, and toilet habits, are linked to your hemorrhoids becoming active.

Is drug treatment a definitive solution?

At every stage, appropriate drug treatment is applied first. Surgery is the definitive solution only in patients who do not respond to treatment, or who respond but experience repeated attacks continuously.

What are the treatment methods?

They are drug treatments and surgery. Today, instead of painful surgical procedures, the Longo procedure, which we call a painless surgical method with a quick recovery, is preferred.

What is the time to return to social life after surgery?

It varies according to the type of surgery performed. The Longo procedure, a method with minimal pain that allows you to return to normal life in about a week, is the preferred choice. In the painful method called Milligan-Morgan, recovery takes 2-3 months.

Is the post-operative process painful?

In the painful method, there is quite severe pain during the first 15 days, which then gradually decreases over 2-3 months. In the Longo method, however, there is pain lasting 7-10 days that responds to painkillers.

Can hemorrhoids be a sign of other diseases?

Hemorrhoids do not turn into cancer. However, if patients with bowel cancer also have hemorrhoids, both may be detected late, since both cause bleeding. For this reason, after examination and history-taking, a colonoscopy is requested for some patients.

Do hemorrhoids recur?

Depending on the type of surgery, they may or may not recur. When choosing a surgical method, be sure to ask your general surgeon about the recurrence rate of each method before making a decision.
