What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy and what is it used for? Spec. Dr. Emine Ömür explains it for you. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a treatment in which the patient breathes 100% oxygen inside a pressure chamber while being exposed to a pressure 2–3 times higher than atmospheric pressure at sea level. In this way, the amount of oxygen in the blood and tissues can be increased up to 20-fold. During the first minutes of the treatment, known as the “dive”, patients feel the pressure increase inside the chamber in their ears, just as they would during an airplane's descent for landing or when coming down from high mountains. As the pressure rises, patients equalize the pressure in their ears by swallowing or by performing the Valsalva maneuver (which is taught to the patient before the dive). An HBOT session usually lasts 1.5 to 2 hours, although this varies from case to case. Most patients receive one session per day. However, in some emergencies, treatment may be given more than once a day. The total number of sessions varies depending on the disease, but in chronic conditions it averages between 30 and 60 sessions.
