A tic is an involuntary, rapid, non-rhythmic, stereotyped, repetitive contraction of a group of muscles. It can be observed in any muscle group of the body, especially the head. Tic disorders, both temporary and permanent, affect family life, social status, and school and work performance.A tic appears as a sudden, repetitive movement or sound. It generally occurs in short episodes and intermittently. Tourette disorder is the most severe tic disorder. It usually begins in early childhood with transient simple motor tic episodes, and after a while these tics become persistent and affect the child's life. Simple motor tics may develop into complex motor tics as the condition progresses. This is followed by the addition of vocal tics. Vocal tics may manifest as throat clearing, a marked change in the speed and rhythm of speech, and swearing.
